Import Excel to Shopify — No Reformatting Needed

You can import an Excel file into Shopify without converting it to CSV or renaming any columns. Upload your .xlsx file as-is, let AI map your supplier's columns to Shopify product fields, and import directly.

This guide shows you how — and explains why the manual way takes so long.

Why is importing Excel to Shopify so difficult?

Shopify's built-in CSV importer expects a specific template with exact column names like Title, Body (HTML), Variant Price, and Variant SKU. Supplier files never match this format.

A typical supplier spreadsheet looks like this:

Item Code Description Trade Price RRP Barcode Pack Size
ABC-001 Cotton T-Shirt 8.50 24.99 5012345678901 S,M,L,XL

Before you can use Shopify's built-in importer, you'd need to:

  1. Rename every column to match Shopify's format
  2. Split size packs into separate variant rows
  3. Map "Trade Price" to either Variant Price or Variant Compare At Price
  4. Convert barcodes to the right format
  5. Save as CSV

This takes 30-60 minutes per file, and you have to do it every time the supplier sends an update.

How to import Excel to Shopify without reformatting

Instead of manually reformatting, upload the Excel file as-is and let AI figure out which supplier column maps to which Shopify field.

Step 1: Install Csvio

Open the Csvio listing on the Shopify App Store and click Add app. The app installs inside your Shopify Admin — nothing to download or configure.

Step 2: Upload your Excel file

Drag your .xlsx or .xls file onto the upload area. Csvio reads Excel files natively. You don't need to open the file first, rename columns, or save as CSV.

Step 3: Review the column mapping

The AI reads your column headers and maps each one to the closest Shopify product field:

Review the mapping and adjust any fields that look wrong. Once you confirm, Csvio saves the mapping for this supplier. The next time you upload a file from the same supplier, it's applied automatically.

Step 4: Import

Click Import to Shopify. Products are created directly in your Shopify Admin. No intermediate CSV download, no manual upload.

How does Csvio handle variants in Excel files?

Supplier files handle variants in different ways. Csvio detects the pattern automatically:

Comma-separated sizes in one cell — S,M,L,XL in a "Sizes" column gets split into four separate Shopify variants.

Separate rows per variant — if your file has one row per size/color combination, Csvio groups them by product title or SKU prefix into multi-variant products.

Size columns — some suppliers use separate columns for each size (S Qty, M Qty, L Qty). Csvio treats each column as a variant with the column header as the option value and the cell value as inventory quantity.

Do I have to re-map columns every time?

No. Once you've confirmed a mapping for a supplier, Csvio remembers it. When you upload the next weekly or monthly file from the same supplier:

  1. Upload the file
  2. The saved mapping is applied instantly
  3. Click Import

The whole process takes about 10 seconds for returning suppliers.
